Our Sales Manager, Glenn Steckler, traveled to Nepal in November of 2022 for the Manaslu Multi-stageTrail Race and ended up making coffee connections. We first experienced Nepalese coffee in 2018 through Bhavana Importers but that was a one time opportunity and we never saw it again! The coffee itself is quite unique – spicy, good body, hints of dark chocolate – and we hope this could lead to a more regular supply… Here is Glenn’s story-

On a group running trip in the remote Nepalese Himalayas you get to know the people around you very intimately, to say the least. Our international group of runners included local organizers and athletes, with Neer Lalit Priya handling in-country logistics for our group. Over days of running over rugged terrain covering up to 18 miles a day at elevations reaching over 17,000 feet, I came to learn that Neer was in the process of planting his own coffee farm.

Once I arrived back to the US, we stayed in touch and Neer offered to send us some green coffee to roast from his coffee growing partners at Nature Hills Multi Agro Farm in Arghakhanchi, Gulmi District, that he works with in the area around his plantation while he waits for his own plants to mature. As a result we are able to offer this extremely small batch of exclusive grower-direct coffee.

We received just 25 pounds of these special beans that made the long journey from a rural region of land-locked Nepal to our remote and, also, land-locked Telluride, high in the Colorado Rockies. Our lead roaster, Colin Quinn, custom roasted this small, single-origin, batch of compact, dense beans to a rich milk chocolate-colored hue, and we then let the coffee rest over a number of days; that time brought forth spice-driven, cocoa, and warm enveloping aromas before cupping. Once brewed we found notes of Nutella, chai, exotic cooking spices and a low-acid, mouth-coating richness.

We are sharing the proceeds from the sale of this coffee with the Nepalese growers, and with Neer Lalit Priya, who was kind enough to bear the expense and figure out the logistics of sending us the green coffee. Due to the small amount of coffee available and our desire to have as many people as possible be able to try it, we are limiting sales to one 6 oz bag per order.

Each bag yields at least 3 x 32oz French Presses or 8-10 x 10oz pour overs – plenty of opportunity to experience the taste of place that is Nepal.

We would appreciate your feedback on this coffee; your impressions, tasting notes, and comments, so that we can apply them to help us in-house with our roasting techniques and to pass along your reactions to our friends in Nepal. Your responses will help shape the future of how we move forward with limited specialty coffees like these and will help our partner in Nepal. Please email us at: telluridecoffee@gmail.com – Thank you for your help!

Imagine, coffee beans from Nepal. I had to try this.

The result, a suprisingly good cup of morning joe. Well balanced with a nice full finish.

Kudos to Telluride Coffee in helping the birth of a new coffee grower. I look forward to Neer’s first offering.

Lovely coffee. I am making espresso, and it is rich and smooth, no bitterness whatsoever. Chocolate forward, not very spicy brewed this way.

I suspect it would come out a bit more either brewed differently, or would benefit from a slightly darker roast for espresso.

It is close to my favorite, Avalanche, perhaps a bit smoother and sweeter, but missing the darker edge.
