Peru Carmen de la Frontera

This washed coffee from the Piura region of northwest Peru exhibits flavors reminiscent of the burnt sugar and creaminess of creme brulee, along with cocoa powder and dried almond. A great option for milk based espresso drinks as well as filter and French press coffee!

From Red Fox (importer)- “Carmen de la Frontera is a district in the Huancabamba province of Peru’s Piura region, bordering both Namballe in Cajamarca and Ecuador. It is a region marked by dramatic variations in altitude, climate, and terrain. At the highest elevations—around 3,000 meters above sea level—the landscape transitions into moors and cloud forests, where the cold climate supports only crops like potatoes and other tubers. Just two hours north, near the Ecuadorian border, the environment shifts completely. This area, known as the Selva Alta (“high forest”), is tropical, with dense vegetation and a wider range of agricultural products. Here, coffee and sugar cane are cultivated, and local production includes panela and yonque, a popular sugarcane-based alcoholic beverage. Carmen de la Frontera also lies within the Chicuate-Chinguelas conservation area, home to endangered species such as the Andean cock-of-the-rock, tapir, and spectacled bear. Reaching this remote district is a journey in itself. The drive from the city of Piura takes about 8.5 hours, with the final 5.5 hours along a poorly maintained dirt road. Despite the difficult access, visitors are met with stunning scenery and a warm, welcoming community.”
